Well you know you need to make a living from webdesign. I am mixing web design and SEO and it is working well. I start with improving sites that are live and new work just falls off it without networking hard or spending any money on advertising. Current fees are about £600+ a month from SEO stuff. I will put more tit bits up. Worse bit s you have to hack other designers work and that is time consuming and everything breaks !! Best bit you learn from others mistakes!!!!!
If you have a hosting company looking after your website. Make sure you backup regularly – you can do a an automatic backup – follow these instructions and save your skin http://www.purecalmdesigns.co.uk/ExpressionEngine2.1.3_FL/index.php/weblog/comments/backing_up_your_whole_website_through_cpanel
Working with expression engine can be breeze but also would suggest before you start you have a clear idea of what categories you are going to use. Makes life a lot easier when you great a blog. I have learnt the hard way. I still have more to do on my journal but it is getting there – I will tweak the appearance more as the functionality gets sorted.
Moodle 2 is really stable and with some research is reasonably easy to modify. You do need to brush up on your PHP skills and also understand the way it pulls in CSS and HTML from several files – there is an amazing array of customisation that is available from server administration which includes creating a custom menu.
I have just customised the footer of http://talkmedicalonline.co.uk – take a look !
The appearance of the front page is very easy to edit – mainly use frontpage.php and then go from there – if you cant find the correct layout PHP file just check to see if the standard template is providing some input.
More to do – will blog some findings ….
Prevent most casual users right click and copy your images and copy – put in your html and you cant right click -of course clever users will find away around but it prevents most users stealing your content and protected images
Copy and paste the following code, and make sure it comes right after your <HEAD> tag:
Disable Copy and Paste for greater website security.
Below is a little trick that will stop your visitors from copying and pasting your webpage information.
Add the following html code to your BODY tag:
<body bgcolor=”#FFFFFF” ondragstart=”return false” onselectstart=”return false”>
I am trying to safeguard my hard hard work
Thesis work – Talk Medical online http://talkmedicalonline.co.uk
I have been cleansing code and compressing ! 27 % improvement in site speed but there are issues .
- Do not compress and combine CSS And JS files too hastily – you need to have clean uncompressed versions ready as it will all break – defo guaranteed and 100%
- Test lots and then restore to uncompressed as you wont be able to edit a thing after all your code squeezing activities
And then test to see how luxury and fast your results are – I still have a lot of small tweaks to make but things are improving
Well busy working on SEO for my thesis site http://www.talkmedicalonline.co.uk . I have found some new tools and will post any good findings as I work to improve the ratings of the site. Still need to get more links – I think I will write a few articles and get them published too. The list grows of things to do.
Today looking at website called www.copyscape.com to check if anyone is using my new copy !! Will report all !
My hit list at present for getting into the page rank ratings war
- Code check
- Speed site- explore compression and smaller size pics etc
- Add links
- And then breath !!!
To help drive traffic to my thesis site and also to help develop my own portfolio site I built a journal for myself in Expression Engine – formats I can post video, quote, general entry, quote and links – used a great tutorial to do it http://shapingthepage.com/journal/how-to-build-a-simple-tumblr-blog-with-expressionengine
Other SEO work
Also added links to my site and been writing to lots of related sites for links – this so far is not easy but I will continue to try and get some good solid link backs. Build a facebook page for Talk Medical Online site http://www.talkmedicalonline.co.uk and here it is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Talkmedical-Online/178354408899948
The work goes on for SEO – the writing of the analysis report has highlighted shortfall areas – needed new sitemap with Google – needed to get yahoo account working (it wasn’t) – needed to register Talk Medical with DMOZ – needed links in !!! And more and more …..
Quick update — well last week of internship – this month I have designed and built a new customer site – still ongoing but design been accepted by client . They are having new logo etc – but really pleased with the initial stuff – take a sneak preview – http://chillishare.co.uk/rh/
Lots of challenges here – built on Joomla using some nice content management stuff provided by K2 – allows you to reuse and reuse content – which is very smart !
I have learnt a ton about working with clients on this internship – and really most important thing which cannot be reiterated is get the detail signed off and do photoshop comps first – saves a ton a time – then build. You will be tempted to drive on but go back and check the detail with the client particularly if you are making over an old site as clients are really attached to old content and their previous navigation. Inspire them to do it differently and factor in SEO as an extra cost upfront – then you take the time to do the extras as you go as opposed to reverse engineering poor naming etc – SEO should be extra in the deal as it takes considerably more planning etc.
Hard work but great experience – internship is great for getting real in web design
Well nearly finished a tough task – I was asked to learn how to use a commercial joomla template to build a website from a design already live. This is my go http://220.127.116.11/matt-test.co.uk/taktest/ – I had to add a different background on a different page and generally make the site look like the one already up and running. Tough task but learnt a lot about joomla templating. The ship mask background was my own idea.
More to follow………
